  • Greg Gunderson, CFP

    President & CEO

    At Investment Centers of America, Inc. (ICA), business really is a family affair. Founded in 1985 by Thomas E. Gunderson, ICA is now managed by his son, Greg Gunderson. Greg has worked hard not only to maintain the family business´ success, but also the firm´s family-oriented culture. "In a business that can, at times, feel very lonely and isolating, ICA ´s culture fosters camaraderie and a sense of belonging," Gunderson says. "Sometimes representatives feel like they are on an island, and we make it a point to connect them with others who can relate to their challenges and struggles. Our reps truly feel like they are part of a team, which is gratifying. You don't find that at a lot of other broker dealers." Gunderson says he enjoys interacting with representatives, which is why he spends a majority of his time in the field. "I like nothing more than getting to know the reps and their businesses, because I can empathize with them and appreciate where they are coming from," he says. "I spent nine years in straight commission sales and a year as a retail representative with ICA. For someone in my position, it is important to have ´walked-the-walk´ in order to fully understand the challenges representatives face." After joining ICA in 1994, Gunderson was responsible for growing investment sales at ICA by more than 100 percent between 1995 and 2000. While that figure is impressive, Gunderson refuses to take all the credit. He says ICA ´s success is based on several factors, including the firm´s affiliation with Prudential plc and Jackson National Life Insurance Company. "All sides benefit from the relationship we've established," he says. "ICA has access to capital, technology, and structure from Prudential and Jackson National ®. We can then use those resources to get close to the client and actually deliver the products and services. Our affiliation has helped us be positioned to win." For Gunderson, having access to tremendous resources, while still being allowed to focus on its niche market, helps the firm retain its unique culture - which in turn, attracts more representatives.

  • R. Byron Hill

    SVP Financial Solutions

    Byron Hill, Senior Vice President, Financial Solutions, has over 30 years of experience in the financial services industry and first entered into the industry as an investment representative with E.F. Hutton & Co. Inc. He joined Investment Centers of America, Inc. in 1988 as a registered representative in Jamestown, ND. In 1992, Byron formed Bond Centers of America, Inc. and worked with many of Investment Centers of America, Inc. (ICA)'s representatives and financial institutions with their bond business. He also was involved with several bond underwritings during that time period. In 1994 he became a Regional Manager for ICA and worked in that capacity until 2002, when he moved into the Home Office on a full-time basis to oversee the newly formed Wealth Management Department and to help lead ICA into the world of investment advisory business. The Wealth Management Department has served as a unique financial planning, retirement planning, wealth transfer, and investment advisory resource for all of ICA's advisers. Byron received his B.S. Degree from Valley City, ND State University and his Master of Science Degree from Minnesota State University, Mankato. He is an active presenter in ICA's Orientation Training Class and also presents at many of the Investment Centers of America conferences and meetings held across the country.

    General Counsel/SVP Regulatory

    Gerry Gunderson is General Counsel and Senior Vice President for Regulatory Affairs for National Planning Holdings, Inc. (NPH) managing legal services, compliance, and regulatory affairs for its subsidiary broker/dealers - Investment Centers of America, Inc. (ICA), SII Investments, Inc. (SII), National Planning Corporation (NPC), and INVEST Financial Corporation (INVEST). Gerry holds his Series 7, 24, 63, and 65 securities and investment advisory registrations. ICA, SII, INVEST, and NPC are full service broker-dealers serving the needs of registered representatives, independent financial planners, and financial institutions nationwide. Each is a member firm of FINRA and SIPC. The firms are commonly owned with Jackson National Life Insurance Company (Jackson). Gerry joined NPH through its acquisition of ICA, a firm that was started by his father, and continues to serve as Senior Vice President of ICA. Gerry was formerly the Chief Compliance Officer for ICA, has served as a Senior Vice President and Litigation Counsel for INVEST, and was the President and CEO of Trust Center of America; a North Dakota chartered trust company affiliated with ICA. He has also provided legal services for Jackson National Life. Following graduation from Jamestown College, Gerry attended and graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Law with distinction in 1983. After serving as a Staff Attorney with the North Dakota Legislative Council, Gerry was a shareholder at Wheeler Wolf Law Firm in Bismarck, North Dakota, from 1985 through 1993, with a practice that included commercial and banking law, while also serving as a Special Assistant Attorney General representing the North Dakota Protection and Advocacy Project; a state agency advocating for the developmentally disabled within the state.

  • Mark Brakel, CFP

    SVP/New Business Development

    Mark Brakel has over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry serving in various capacities. Prior to joining ICA as the Financial Institution Strategic Relationship Manager, Mark was most recently VP for a community bank with direct responsibility for the investment portfolio and liquidity management functions of the institution. Mark also had responsibility for commercial cash management, retail brokerage, marketing, and sales training. Additionally, Mark has previous experience with ICA as the National Sales Manager and a program manager for a large bank program located in 12 states. Mark and his team provide insight on how to successfully manage and support a program from the top down. He is provided in depth value to our partner banks by helping them manage some of the biggest challenges facing community banks today.

  • JJ Hudock

    VP New Business Development

    J.J. Hudock has worked with financial institutions in a New Business Development capacity since 2002. He joined ICA from LPL Financial where he served as VP of New Business Development for the West Coast Territory. J.J. first entered the business with UVEST Financial Services where he was part of a team that brought on over 300 financial institutions in a four year period of time. He transitioned to LPL in 2006 when UVEST was purchased by LPL, and was promoted to take over west coast business development team. He lead the institutions services area in new business and had oversight for; conversions, implementations and recruiting. Prior to his position at UVEST/ LPL he was the Sales Manager for Nationwide Insurance in Charlotte North Carolina where he managed P&C, Life and Series 6 representatives. In 1999 he played a significant role in a pilot program for Nationwide Insurance adding retirement services to their menu for clients. J.J. also spent 3 years in the mortgage banking business as loan officer. J.J. is responsible for establishing new relationships with non-affiliated financial institutions, and with assisting the institutions with recruitment of new talent. J.J. holds FINRA Series 6, 63 registrations, is Insurance Licensed with the State of North Carolina.

  • Jim Komoszewski

    SVP Practice Management

    Jim Komoszewski brings over 16 years of financial services industry experience to his position at Investment Centers of America, Inc. As Senior Vice President and Regional Manager, Jim is charged with bringing his practice management expertise to ICA Financial Advisors. Additionally, as Regional Manager, Jim will be responsible for working with financial institutions and advisors in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Jim comes to ICA from National Planning Corporation, where he was 1st Vice President and Director of Practice Management. Before joining NPC, Jim worked for Jackson National Life, serving as a Regional Vice President for five years. While at Jackson, Jim served on the Leadership Council and was the recipient of several awards. Prior to Jackson, he held positions as a Regional Vice President with Traveler’s Insurance and Sun Life Financial, serving on the executive advisory council at both firms. Jim has also worked in the field as a financial advisor and has written a widely used sales model for Jackson’s sales force. Jim holds FINRA Series 7, 24 and 63 designations as well as his Minnesota life insurance license.
